National Barbie Day is celebrated on March 9th of every year. Barbie is a fashion doll manufactured by the American toy company Mattel Inc, and it was launched in March 1959. From 1959, March 9th is celebrated as Barbie’s official birthday.  Barbie has been an essential part of the toy fashion doll market for over fifty years. Barbie is one of the first toys to have been marketed in television advertising. It is estimated that over a billion Barbie dolls have been sold worldwide in over 150 countries. A song was also made by Aqua called Barbie Girl featuring  Barbie and her boyfriend. Barbie’s popularity has led to the celebration of the day.

History of National Barbie Day

The creator and the reason behind the creation of National Barbie Day are unidentified. It is believed to be celebrated because the day is also Barbie’s official birthday. The Barbie doll made its appearance at the American International Toy Fair in New York in 1959. Barbie’s full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts, and she was created by Ruth Handler, an American businesswoman who used a German doll called Bild Lilli as her inspiration. Ken Carson, Barbie’s boyfriend, was introduced by Mattel in 1961. Ruth Handler was the wife of Elliot, the co-founder of the toy giant Mattel, Inc. Later barbies have gone through many changes, evolution, and controversies.
