International Women in Engineering Day is observed on June 23 of every year. It is an international event celebrated during Engineers Week each year. Engineering is the branch of science and technology involved with the design, building, and use of engines, machines, and structures and one who practices engineering is called an engineer. The Day has developed from a national, into an International awareness campaign to increase the profile of women in engineering and focus on the exciting career opportunities available to girls in Engineering.
“When I was in high school, I was certain that being an astronaut was my goal. It was a very important time — Sally Ride was making her first flight into space and she had a real impact on me. Those ‘firsts’ kind of stick in your head and really become inspirations for you.” – Karen Nyberg, Astronaut
History of International Women in Engineering Day
The origin and founder of International Women in Engineering Day remain unknown. Engineering has existed since ancient times. But this day must be created to increase interest in engineering among early high school students especially girls. This day gives young female students a unique opportunity to discover Engineering careers alongside world-class scientists and engineers. On this day, encourage everyone to join in to help celebrate women in the amazing industry and encourage major girls and young women to consider engineering as a career. So they learn that they have a place in the engineering world.
