History of International Men’s Day
The International Men’s Day (IMD) has been celebrated since the year 1999. Thomas Oaster inaugurated it on 7th February 1992. Later on November 19, 1999, the project was re-initialized in Trinidad and Tobago. The representatives from the organizations like the UN has expressed their support for this event. However, this Day was not made as an official UN observance. So a petition has been called for the UN to make this Day an official UN observance in the interest of equality. The celebration Day primarily focuses on the men’s and boy’s health. The international Day aims in improving gender relations, raising gender equality, and highlighting the male role models.
The International Men’s Day highlights the discrimination against men and boys, celebrates their achievements and contributions to their family, marriage, child care, and community. The Men’s Day looks at addressing issues which men face like parenting, positive male role models, families, and healthy life choices for the men. Promoting the basic humanitarian values is the broader and ultimate aim of this Day. More than 80 countries from all over the world are celebrating this international event, and many other countries are promoting this Day very recently. This international event also highlights the inequalities faced by both men and boys.
The IMD history concerns the issues that are primarily considered to be unique to men’s and boys experiences. It involves in emphasising the positive role models as the images of males are most often mentioned negatively. According to IMD creators, this Day is a time to highlight the positive aspects of male identity. The positive male role is highlighted by assuming that men of all the ages will acknowledge much more energetically to the positive role models than they do to the negative gender stereotyping.
