National Columnists Day is an annual observance held on April 18th. Columns are the most important part of any newspaper, magazine, or even other publications. The person who provides the written works like commentary and opinions on current events or topics in the publications are the columnists. These columnists will have a number of people who actively look forward to reading their pieces the column every day. Most often they and their works were unrecognized and forgotten. National Columnists Day is created to honor all the newspaper columnists and their incredible contributions as the form of writings to society.

“Teamwork is better than isolation, especially for a columnist.” – Allan Sloan

History of National Columnists Day

National Columnists Day has been celebrated since 1995. The National Society of Newspaper Columnists has founded this special celebration Day for the newspaper columnists. The Society was founded in 1977 as a professional organization for columnists and journalists. Columnists Day has been established on April 18th, in memory of the columnist named Ernie Pyle, an American columnist who was killed on the same date in the year 1945 while reporting in Okinawa, Japan during the World War II. Pyle was a Pulitzer Prize winner who reported from both the European and Pacific theatres. National Columnists Day is also known as Newspaper Columnists Day, and it aims to appreciate the work of the columnists and to make the people informed of the dangers faced by the columnists every day. It is a celebration dedicated to all the columnists and journalists who work in dangerous situations for the sole purpose to uncover the truth and keeping the world informed all the time.
