International Chess Day is observed on July 20 of every year. International Chess Day celebrates the Chess game around the world. Chess is a strategic game played between two people using a 64-square checkered board, and the person who captures the king of the other is considered to be the winner. Chess is the only sport that is played and celebrated by the majority of adults and kids in the world. Chess is a unique indoor game that can be learned quickly but is challenging to master. Chess has stood the test of time, serving for centuries with few changes to the underlying rules. On this day, FIDE (International Chess Federation) organizes events and competitions for players all around the globe. International Chess Day ultimately encourages more people to play and enjoy the game.

Chess helps you to concentrate, improve your logic. It teaches you to play by the rules and take responsibility for your actions, how to problem solve in an uncertain environment.” – Garry Kasparov

History of International Chess Day

International Chess Day was founded by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in the year 1924. UNESCO proposed the idea to celebrate the day in an international aspect in 1966. This year, the FIDE will be celebrating its 98th anniversary. The motivation for the creation of the day is to raise the number of chess players around the world and also to encourage everyone to try this fantastic game. It is said that 70% of people must have played the game at least once in their lifetime. Playing chess can help one unleash their originality, as it activates the right side of the brain, it will also develop one’s problem-solving skills, and raises the IQ. For the benefit of yourself, play the game regularly.
