Self-injury Awareness Day or SIAD is celebrated on March 1 of every year. This day is also called “Self-Harm Awareness Day“. It is a global event that is observed annually to educate people about self-injury and to encourage medical professionals, teachers,  parents, and family members to recognize the symptoms of self-harm. On Self-injury Awareness Day, some people who have personal experience of self-harm will speak about it in the event to raise awareness about self-injury.

Sometimes I even cut myself to see how much it bleeds It’s like adrenaline, the pain is such a sudden rush for me.” – Eminem.

History of Self-injury Awareness Day

The origin and history of Self-injury Awareness Day or Self-Harm Awareness Day are not known. In the United States of America and Canada, the month of March is celebrated as Self-Injury Awareness Month. Self-harm is a disorder that can occur at any age, but most people seen with this disease are in the teenage and young adulthood. Depression is one of the main reasons for self-injury. At present more than about 2 million Americans are involved in self-injury. Most people self-harm with acts like cutting, burning, or scratching the skin, hitting themselves and breaking bones, etc. Those who engage in self-injury are mostly left alone, so experts advise that those who self-harm need support and treatment as it may lead to suicidal behavior.
