History of National Senior Citizens Day

The history and origin of National Senior Citizens Day date back to 1988. It was officially established by Ronald Reagan, who was the president of the United States of America during that time. President Ronald Reagan had signed the Proclamation 5847 on August 19, 1988, which declared August 21 as the National Senior Citizens Day. The President was the first to proclaim the first National Senior Citizens Day. The proclamation is mentioned is quoted below.

For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older — places in which older people can participate to the fullest and can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance, and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity.

The President had written in his explanation as

“Older citizens are reinforcing their historical, roles as leaders and as links with our patrimony and sense of purpose as individuals and as a Nation.”

The achievement of the older people for the society of all the families, communities, and the country seems to be marked in history. The observance of the day is done to honor those senior citizens who had made positive contributions to their societies. Also, the day was organized to bring in some form of awareness about the social, economic, and health issues concerning senior citizens.

Various events and activities will be arranged on National Senior Citizens Day to increase the awareness of those older people and thus to recognize their achievements. Through modern communication tools like social media and news stories, some people will promote awareness as a form of thanksgiving for their endless support. While the others will organize special community functions and meetings inviting the senior citizens, along with their families, friends, and volunteers. Some stores give special discounts or deals to the senior citizens on or around the celebration. There are also various appreciation days celebrated for senior citizens from all over the world, and however, all of those days have one aim. It is to appreciate the senior citizens to be a part of our societies.
