National Lost Dog Awareness Day is celebrated on April 23 of every year. National Lost Dog Awareness Day is created to bring awareness to the public to help the lost dogs find their family back. Most of the time it is assumed that all the dogs that wander on the roads are stray, but some are just missing looking for ways to get back home. It also teaches them ways to help dogs owner prevent their furry friend from getting lost. It is a day to create awareness and a day to celebrate the successful reunions that have happened to date. Many shelters and rescues across the United States use this day to help their dogs in the care to get home. National Lost Dog Awareness Day is also a day to give hope to the families who have lost their pooch and are having a rough time finding them.

History of National Lost Dog Awareness Day

The day was founded by Susan Taney and Kathy Pobloskie, the directors of Lost Dogs Illinois and Lost Dogs of Wisconsin, respectively. Lost Dogs of America (LDOA) was established in  2011, and it was started to be celebrated as a day on April 23, 2014. The organization has a tremendous amount of information on the lost dogs to help people find them. It has almost helped 42,000 dogs find their home. Lost Dogs of America uses the networks of shelters, veterinaries, social media, and other media sources to find the lost dogs. Social media has been found to be a very effective way to reunite dogs with their families. LDOA’s slogan is “Not All Stray Dogs Are Homeless.” So help a pooch if you think they are being lost.
