History of National Jelly Bean Day

The origin of National Jelly Bean Day remains anonymous. However, Jelly Bean was first manufactured during the 1800s. Though candies similar to jelly beans existed before, it was a Boston Candy manufacturer William Schrafft who made jelly beans famous during the American civil war by promoting his customer to send those candies to the troops fighting in the Civil War. The promotion happened through advertisement in 1961. Jelly beans were first mentioned in Chicago Daily News on July 5, 1905. It was in the 1930s; jelly beans were found to be closely associated with Easter due to their shape. The first eight flavors of jelly beans introduced in 1976 were Very Cherry, Root Beer, Cream Soda, Tangerine, Green Apple, Lemon, Licorice, and Grape. Jelly beans were primarily liked by America’s 40th President, Ronald Reagan. Few legends believe that jelly beans to be originated from a Turkish delight or lokum, a chewy candy from Turkey,  though it is obscure who invented them.
