International Earth Day is observed on April 22 of every year. International Earth Day is celebrated around the world to demonstrate the support for environmental protection. The Earth Day Network globally coordinates this day, and it is observed in nearly 193 countries. The main aim of the day is to raise awareness about environmental issues and to show our appreciation for the improvement of the natural environment. Let’s honor and protect our natural environment by taking part in International Earth Day. In United Stations, International Earth Day is referred to as International Mother Earth Day.

It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the largest source of so much in life that makes life worth living.” – David Attenborough

History of International Earth Day

In 1940, Senator Gaylord Nelson organized this day on April 22 to promote ecology and increase awareness about the increasing water, air, and soil pollution problems. In some parts of the world, International Mother Earth Day is observed around the March equinox. The symbol used to describe the day contains an image of planet earth; a flower or leaves depicting the growth, and the colors like green, blue and brown will be used. Let’s celebrate the Day by spreading awareness among the people about the protection of our natural environment.

Lyrics for the Earth Day Anthem “Ode to Joy” are as follows:

Joyful joyful we adore our Earth in all its wonderment
Simple gifts of nature that all join into a paradise
Now we must resolve to protect her
Show her our love throughout all time
With our gentle hand and touch
We make our home a newborn world
Now we must resolve to protect her
Show her our love throughout all time
With our gentle hand and touch
We make our home a newborn world
