History of Repeal Day

The first observance of Repeal Day was celebrated in the year 1933. The Twenty-first Amendment to the United States Constitution has propelled this Day. Between  5th January 1919 and 5th, December 1933 United States was prohibited from consuming alcohol. Thus the start of the twentieth century in America was a dark time without alcohol. Prohibition had been promoted by the Women’s Christian Temperance Union for many years. They had believed that alcohol was the cause of many problems. They had firmly believed that if not all the problems were the cause of alcohol, at least the social ills.

On 16th January 1919, Congress passed the Eighteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, enabling national prohibition one year later. It banned alcohol and apparently put an end to alcoholism, crime, mental illness, and poverty. Many women, most notably the members of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, were important in bringing about the national Prohibition in the United States. They had believed that it would protect several families, women, and children from the effects of alcohol abuse. America’s thirst for alcohol had increased during Prohibition. Organized crime rose up that replaced the formerly legal methods of production and distribution.

The proponents of Prohibition had thought that banning alcoholic beverages would reduce or even eliminate many social problems. During Prohibition, people proceeded to produce and drink alcohol. The bootlegging had even helped raise a massive production under the control of organized crime. Drinking had become increasingly fashionable where most mothers worried about the effects of alcohol. On December 5th, 1933, Utah, the final state needed for a three-quarters majority, approved the Twenty-first Amendment, abolishing Prohibition and thereby restoring the Americans with the right to a celebratory drink.
