History of National Seed Swap Day

The National Seed Swap Day has been celebrated since 2006. The first official Washington Gardener Magazine Seed Exchange was held in Washington, DC, on 26 January 2006. Kathy Jentz, who was the editor cum publisher of the magazine, has established this Day. On gaining popularity, the Day has become a nationwide celebration. Seeds were considered to be one of the first commodities that were valued and traded. Seed Swap is an event where gardeners from different parts of the country meet to exchange seeds.

Seed swapping can either be arranged online or by mail when those in need of seeds are spread out geographically. Gardeners exchanging their excess seeds in person are also growing in popularity. This is partly done to increase people’s interest in organic gardening and heritage or heirloom plant variants. They swap the best plants to improve biodiversity and make an ultimate form of recycling.
