History of World Tourism Day

World Tourism Day was established by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in the year 1980. The reason for celebrating the day on September 27 is on the same date in 1970, the Statutes of the UNWTO were adopted. In global tourism, the adoption of these Statutes is considered to be a milestone. The UNWTO Secretary-General will send out a message to the general public annually to mark the occasion. The UNWTO believes that the date for World Tourism Day is appropriate for the following reasons.  Each year, Tourism Day has a different theme for its celebration. World Tourism Day 2017 theme is “Sustainable Tourism – a Tool for Development.” The day comes at the end of the high tourist season in the northern hemisphere, and in the southern hemisphere, it is the start of the tourist season. Tourism is of topical interest to numerous people worldwide, especially travelers and those working in the tourism sector.

The celebration of Tourism Day is to provide universally accessible Tourism for all. Tourism benefits both the tourist and the tourist locations that they visit. Tourism is one of the primary drivers of economic growth. Government agencies, tourism enterprises, and other organizations are working with a special interest in tourism to celebrate the event with many special events and carnivals. Tourism is a trip made for recreational, vacation, or business purposes.

World Tourism Day

The United Nations World Tourism Organization defines tourists as people “traveling to and staying in places outside their normal environment for not more than one continuous year for leisure, business, and other purposes.” The Global Code of Ethics for Tourism helps in increasing the tourism benefits and thus minimizing its impact and thereby protecting the people, cultures, and environments of the locations where people visit and experience. World Tourism Day portrays the incredible diversity and beauty of the planet we live on to the people globally. On this day, several competitions will be held, like photo competitions that help in promoting tourism, tourism award presentations in areas such as ecotourism, and much more will be conducted. Other notable activities include free entries, discounts, or special offers will be offered. To promote the region and World Tourism Day, the government and community leaders, as tourism business representatives, may give public announcements or offer special trips or fares.
