World Poetry Day is celebrated on March 21st of every year. Poem and poetry is an art that narrates one’s inner feelings about anything in the form of linguistic expression. Those who are skilled in expressing it are the poets. The world has seen so many poets and their poetry varies with language, theme, and some poetry types are specific to the particular cultures and genres such that it responds to the characteristics of that language in which the poet writes. Any form of poem, poet, and poetry needs to be appreciated with a special day in the calendar. As to recognize and support all the poets and poetry from around the world, World Poetry Day has been created. Poetry Day is the best chance to introduce people to poetry and encourages them to express their feelings and emotions in the form of a poem.

“Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.” – Robert Frost

History of World Poetry Day

World Poetry Day (WPD) has been first celebrated in the year 2000. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has declared this Day on its 30th session held in Paris in 1999. The purpose of this Day for poetry is to promote the reading, writing, publishing, and teaching of poetry everywhere in the world. However, the original UNESCO declaration says that this Day is created to give fresh recognition and impetus to the national, regional, and international poetry movements. World Poetry Day also appreciates and supports all the poets and poetry from around the world. Poetry is considered to be one of humanity’s most treasured forms of cultural, linguistic expression, and identity.

World Poetry Day

By celebrating poetry, UNESCO recognizes the unique ability of poetry to capture the creative spirit of the human mind. The primary objective of this celebration Day is to offer endangered languages the opportunity to be heard within their communities and to support linguistic diversity through poetic expression. With the WPD, poets are honored, and the oral traditions of poetry recitals are reviewed. Poetry Day is the occasion to promote the reading, writing, and teaching skills of poetry and to strengthen the convergence between poetry and other arts including theatre, dance, music, and painting, as to raise the visibility of poetry in the media field.

Poetry is one of the ancient practices that exist in every culture and on every continent. It is important to encourage small publishers and to create an attractive image of poetry in the media. Thus the art of poetry will no longer be regarded as an outdated form of art but to be termed as the one which enables society as a whole to regain and assert its identity. Poetry is a form of creativity that continues to bring people together across the globe. Poetry expresses our common humanity and our shared values and helps in transforming the simplest of poems into a powerful incentive for both dialogue and peace.
