National Poem in Your Pocket Day is celebrated on April 24 of every year. National Poem in Your Pocket Day is created to share the joy that poems bring by carrying one in your pocket and sharing it throughout the day with others. Hence, National Poem in Your Pocket Day is a day to carry your favorite poem in your pocket and share it with your family members, friends, co-workers, and even strangers.

“The genesis of a poem for me is usually a cluster of words. The only good metaphor I can think of is a scientific one: dipping a thread into a supersaturated solution to induce crystal formation. I don’t think I solve problems in my poetry; I think I uncover the problems.” – Margaret Atwood

History of National Poem in Your Pocket Day

In 2002, the New York City Departments of Cultural Affairs and Education Coordinated with the Mayor to design their own special commemoration for Poetry Day and this move brought the National Poem in Your Pocket Day. After six years, the Academy of American Poets trumped this day through 50 States, which encourages the entire nation to carry the poem with them which inspired their hearts and called them to greatness, and then to share the poem with others. The year 2016 saw the League of Canadian Poets pick up the torch and spread it to America’s Northern Neighbor. Hence, it is a perfect day to carry your favorite poem in your pocket and share it with your family members, friends, co-workers, and even strangers also
