National One Cent Day is celebrated on April 1 of every year. National One Cent Day is observed to honor the origin and history of the one-cent coin which is often called the “penny.” These one-cent coins are in distribution since 1793 in the United States, but the current one-cent coin made with copper and zinc, bearing the image of Abraham Lincoln didn’t come into distribution until 1909. The face of Abraham Lincoln on the coins began to progress as a result of the decision made by American President Roosevelt to raise the artistic value of the American currency.

History of National One Cent Day
The origin and history of National One Cent Day are not known. The United States initially issued a one-cent coin in 1787, made by a private mint. Benjamin Franklin planned it. On one side of the coin, it will be written as Mind Your Business, and on the other side We Are One, and it was made of 100% copper. The size of the one-cent coin was reduced in the 1850s to handle it easily and to make it economical. In the year 1856, the mint manufactured the cent with Flying Eagle on one side and a wreath on the other side. This coin was shortly replaced in 1859 with the Indian Head cent which became famous quickly, and it remained in distribution for decades. After that came the one-cent coin with the image of President Abraham Lincoln.
