However, the creator of this Day intends to celebrate macaroons, small round biscuits. The history of macaroons can be traced back to the 9th-century from the Italian monastery. As the macaroons do not contain any flour but it contains coconut or potato starch and thus they do not come under the classification of cookies. Macaroon is typically prepared from the ground almonds as the original ingredient, coconut, nuts like pecans, cashews, food coloring, glace cherries, and sugar. Sometimes, honey, vanilla, or spices are used as the flavorings and are coated with jam or a chocolate coating. Some recipes use the sweetened condensed milk, and most often macaroons are baked on the edible rice paper placed on a baking tray.
Macaroons have been believed to have been prepared first in an Italian monastery, and later the Italian monks and nuns have introduced macaroons to France. They were most popular among the Jewish community, particularly during Passover as Jews don’t cook with flour. The word ‘macaroon’ has come from the Italian word ‘Maccarone‘ meaning paste. Macaroons were named so as the primary ingredient in the first macaroon recipes was almond paste. The macaroon prepared from desiccated coconut instead of almond is the most commonly found macaroon from around the world.
