The resulting cake is gently cooked until the butter puffs up the dough creating a layered aspect of it. The name of this cake came from the Breton words for butter, “Amann,” and cake, “Kouign,” and This is combined into a single form and called Kouign Amann.

Kouign Amann Day became the official day in 2015, which was submitted by the San Francisco bakery b.patisserie in April 2015. The Registrar of the National Day Calendar declared June 20 as National Kouign Amann Day.
