Bhogi
Bhogi is observed on the first day of the four-day Pongal festival. It is celebrated on 14 January of this year. In Tamil Calendar, this corresponds to last day of the Tamil month Maargazhi. It is marked in honor of Lord Indra, the God of Clouds and Rains. This day is observed widely in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. On Bhogi, people throw away old and hazardous things and concentrate on new things causing change or transformation. A ritual observed on this day; useless household articles are thrown into a fire made of wood and cow-dung cakes. Girls dance around the bonfire, singing songs in praise of the gods, the spring and the harvest. It is a day to dispose of all old habits, vices, attachment to relations and material things which are sacrificed in the sacrificial fire of the knowledge of Rudra, known as the Rudra Gita Jnana Yajna. It represents transformation, realization, and purification of the soul.
