International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is observed on November 25 of every year. This day is designated by the United Nations General Assembly to create awareness about the fact that many women around the world are subject to domestic violence, rape, and other forms of violence. 25th November kicks off sixteen days of activism, increasing awareness and encouraging prevention and education, ending on 10th December, Human Rights Day. International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women or Elimination of Violence Against Women Day is a global observance and not a public holiday. On this day, various campaigns and events are organized around the globe to create awareness and educate people to eliminate violence against women.

Violence against women and girls is a human rights violation, public health pandemic and serious obstacle to sustainable development. It imposes large-scale costs on families, communities, and economies. The world cannot afford to pay this price” – Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General.

History of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

On 17 December 1999, November 25 was designated by the United Nations General Assembly as the Elimination of Violence Against Women Day. This date is based on the assassination of three Mirabal sisters on 25th November 1960: María Argentina Minerva Mirabal, Antonia María Teresa Mirabal, and Patria Mercedes Mirabal, who were activists in the Dominican Republic and they stood against the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. These three Mirabal sisters were killed on the orders of the Dominican ruler Rafael Trujillo in the Dominican Republic. Every year, observances around the day for the Elimination of Violence against Women focus on a specific theme, like “Demanding Implementation, Challenging Obstacles.” On this day, women’s groups organize rallies, and various events are organized to create awareness about the prevention of violence against women. On this day, a campaign that people are asked to participate in is the ‘Say No to Violence Against Women campaign.’ Anyone can add their name to the campaign to put an end to human rights violations against women.
