National Constitution Day is commemorated every year on 26th November in India; this day is also known as Samvidhan Divas. Constitution Day is not an official public holiday. National Constitution Day is celebrated to recall the adoption of the Constitution of India. On this day in 1949, the Constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly of India, which came into effect on January 26, 1950. It marks the start of a new era in the history of India. The Father of the Constitution of India is Dr. Ambedkar. He was invited by the Congress government after the independence of India to work as the 1st law minister of India. On 29th August Dr. Ambedkar was chosen as the Constitution Drafting Committee’s Chairman, and Dr. Ambedkar was the principal originator of the Indian Constitution and well known for the powerful and united India.

“I feel that the constitution is workable, it is flexible and it is strong enough to hold the country together both in peacetime and in wartime. Indeed, if I may say so, if things go wrong under the new Constitution, the reason will not be that we had a bad Constitution. What we will have to say is that Man was vile” – BR Ambedkar

History of National Constitution Day

The Government of India on 19th November 2015 announced that 26th November would be observed as Constitution Day in an official gazette notification. In the event of laying the foundation stone of the Dr. Ambedkar memorial in Mumbai on 11th October 2015, Narendra Modi, the Indian Prime Minister, announced the National Constitution Day. 2015 was the 125th birth anniversary of Ambedkar, who played a significant role in the drafting of the Indian Constitution as the Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constituent Assembly. National Constitution Day was previously observed as National Law Day. This date (26th November) was adopted as Constitution Day to spread the significance of the Constitution and to spread Dr. Ambedkar’s views and ideas. The Constitution of India was adopted to constitute India as an independent, non-religious, communist, self-governing Republic to safeguard the citizens of India through justice, liberty, non-discrimination, and union. When the Constitution of India was adopted, Indian citizens stepped into a new constitutional, self-governing, modern, scientific, and progressive India with peace, elegance, and progress. The Constitution of India is very distinctive all over the world and has taken about two years, eleven months, and seventeen days to pass by the Constituent Assembly.
