UN Arabic Language Day is celebrated annually on December 18th of each year. Language doesn’t end as a communication tool. Rather, it is a symbol of culture and heritage. Arabic is one such popular language in the world, with more than 430 million people speaking it. It is also the language of 1.6 billion Muslims worldwide. The Arabic language is found to have a long history and tradition, and UNESCO has recognized it. Thus, the UN Arabic Language Day celebrates the language, its history, and the people speaking it.

“Arabic is very twisting, very beautiful. The call to prayer is quite haunting; it almost makes you a believer on the spot.” – John Updike

History of UN Arabic Language Day

The UN Arabic Language Day has been celebrated since 2010. The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has established this celebration Day. It is also called World Arabic Language Day (WALD). December 18 was precisely chosen as it was on this date in 1973 that the General Assembly approved Arabic as an official UN language. Arabic is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. In seeking to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity and to promote equal use of all of the six official working languages throughout the organization, UNESCO has established this Day. It is one of the modern languages written and read in a right-to-left form. Arabic is a name involving the descendants of the 6th century Classical Arabic language.
