Tolkien, the Tolkien Reading Day has been created, and it is celebrated to encourage people to read the works of this world-renowned English author.

“All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost; the old that is strong does not wither, deep roots are not reached by the frost.” – J. R. R. Tolkien

History of Tolkien Reading Day

The Tolkien Reading Day was created by The Tolkien Society and has been in celebration since 2003. The society was founded in 2002, and initially, they did not celebrate this day. It was Sean Kirst, a New York journalist, who had enquired with society about whether or not an event existed in January 2002, and this eventually made society adopt it. Kirst has been actively organizing this Day every year since 2008. As they did not have enough time to prepare anything for that year, they postponed until next year and began the celebration. The Tolkien Reading Day aims to encourage people to read the works of J. R. R. Tolkien and to use Tolkien’s works both in education and library groups.

Tolkien Reading Day

The date is precisely chosen as it coincides with the auspicious date of the destruction of the One Ring and the downfall of Sauron and Barad-dûr mentioned in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. In the books, this incident was narrated to happen on March 25, 3019, when the Ring fell into the Cracks of Doom. John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (J.R.R. Tolkien) was an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor and is best known as the author of The Lord of the Rings (LOTR) trilogy. According to the novel, all of the incidents take place in a fantasy land called the Middle-earth, which is a continent in the fictional world called Arda.
