The history and origin of Teacher’s Day in India date back to 1962. The observance of the day is a form of tribute to the contributions made by the teachers towards the welfare of society. The celebration of the day is commemorated on the birth date of the second President of India, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He was considered to be a staunch believer of education, a renowned educationist, and a well-known diplomat. He was an Indian philosopher, statesman, and above all, he was a teacher himself. His contribution to the education system in India is enormous. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan is one of India’s most distinguished twentieth-century scholars.

The history behind the teacher’s day is quite interesting. Some of the prominent students of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan had organized a gathering to pay homage to the Great Teacher of repute in 1965. It was during his presidential tenure, and some of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s students as well as friends approached him and requested him to let them celebrate his birthday. Dr. Radhakrishnan in his speech on that gathering had expressed his profound reservation regarding his birth anniversary celebration and had emphasized that his birth anniversary should be celebrated as ‘Teacher’s Day,’ by paying homage to other Great Teachers of the country. He also mentioned that if it is done, then it would be a great privilege for him.

From then on, every September 5th, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s birthday is celebrated as the day for appreciating and honoring the teachers throughout the country. The students can express their genuine appreciation through their wishes on the occasion of teacher’s day to their teachers. Also, on this day the students pay respect and tribute to Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan for his incredible work towards philosophies. The teachers and students on this day report to school as usual as it is an observance and not a holiday.
