Middle Child Day comes on August 12 of every year. Today is a day to recognize middle-born children and acknowledge their place in their families. Being a middle child is not bad. Some of the research shows that being left alone will be a positive thing for middle children. The fact that they may not receive more attention like their siblings, but they can be independent and creative. The lack of expectations will make one develop their personality and their life skills without any constraints. Hence Middle Child Day is a perfect day to recognize the importance of the middle born child in every family.

I’m a typical middle child. I’m the mediator. The one that makes everything OK, puts their own needs aside to make sure everybody’s happy. It’s hard to change your nature, even with years and years of therapy.” – Jennifer Jason Leigh

History of Middle Child Day

In 1980, Elizabeth Walker created the Middle Child Day to honor the Middleborn children in every family. Initially, it was observed on the second Saturday in August, but it becomes accepted to follow it on 12th August. Some peoples believe that the order of one’s birth can affect one’s personality. The middle child is said to suffer from middle child syndrome, a feeling of isolation and exclusion within their family. Some studies also have shown that the youngest and oldest children in the family will get the most attention from their parents and the middle-born child tends to be left by themselves, often forgotten and ignored. They also have to fight for the attention of their parents, and sometimes they feel like they don’t belong to that family. Hence, the day is perfect for every parent to understand that all the children in the family are equal and all of them should be treated with proper attention.
