World First Aid Day is celebrated on the second Saturday of September. This year it will be celebrated on September 9. Any form of help given to a sick or injured person during an emergency situation is called first aid. It is provided until a full medical treatment is available. World First Aid Day is celebrated to bring awareness among the people about the importance of first aid.

History of World First Aid Day
In the year 2000, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) introduced World First Aid Day. The commemoration of the day got its origin from the northern Italy battle held fifty years ago. A young Geneva businessman, Henry Dunant, on 24 June 1859, had seen the horrifying suffering and pain after the battle of Solferino. He enlisted the civilian population and served the wounded, mainly women and girls, irrespective of their role in the fight. With the necessary materials, he established makeshift hospitals and served them.
“A memory of Solferino” is a book by Henry Dunant that inspired the establishment of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the year 1863. IFRC expanded the Red Cross Movement’s international activities beyond the strict mission of the ICRC. The day’s celebration raises public awareness about first aid and how it can save lives every day and during crises. The IFRC encourages people to learn basic first aid training or at least educate themselves to practice any available, reliable sources.
