National Pina Colada Day is celebrated on July 10 of every year. Today is a day to enjoy the taste of Pina Colada. Pina Colada is a sweet cocktail with coconut milk, rum, and pineapple juice. They are usually served either blended or shaken with ice. Pina Colada may be garnished with a pineapple wedge, maraschino cherry, or both. Since 1978, it has been the national drink of Puerto Rico. Therefore, National Pina Colada Day is a perfect day to enjoy the taste of Pina Colada.

History of National Pina Colada Day
The creator or founder of National Pina Colada Day is still unknown. The term “Pina Colada” means strained pineapple, which refers to a freshly pressed and strained pineapple juice used in the drink. There are some claims to the creation of Pina Colada beginning in 1952 in San Juan, but each sticks to the same story. The fact is that pineapple and rum have been together from the beginning of the distillation of Rum. The first written evidence of a Pina Colada was in 1922. However, this recipe did not include coconut. Pina Colada gained fame in Puerto Rico in 1978 and became popular worldwide after Rupert Holmes released his song “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)” in 1979.
