The exact origin and the founder of Draw a Picture of a Bird Day are still unknown. In April 1943, a 7-year-old girl named Dorie Cooper living in England visited her uncle in the hospital. He had been injured in the war, and he lost his right leg. Dorie’s uncle was very worried, so to cheer him up, Dorie Cooper asked him to draw a picture of a bird. After seeing the drawing, Dorie teased him saying the image is not looking perfect, but she would hang the picture in her room. His niece’s action lifted his spirits. Three years later, Dorie died in a car accident. Her coffin was filled with many bird pictures that had been drawn by doctors, nurses, and soldiers who were in the ward of her uncle. Today this day is observed across the world, but it is not declared an official holiday yet.
