Amnesty International Day is an annual celebration and is held on May 28th of every year. Human rights have been the most debated topic throughout centuries. They have been classified into different types right to speak, right to marriage, right to culture, and so on. Several organizations from around the world have been established to focus on protecting all such human rights, and Amnesty International is one of them. The organization is trying to make the world a better place to live in. Amnesty International Day is created with the aim to remind people about the value of human rights. The Day also promotes human rights and raises awareness of the abuses and their effects.

“I stand for simple justice, equal opportunity and human rights. The indispensable elements in a democratic society – and well worth fighting for.” – Helen Suzman

History of Amnesty International Day

Amnesty International Day has been celebrated since the year 1962. Amnesty International, otherwise known as Amnesty or AI, was first established in July 1961 in London. The London-based non-governmental organization is one of the most well-known human rights organizations in the world that focuses on human rights. Peter Benenson has come up with the idea of establishing Amnesty International following the publication of the article named “The Forgotten Prisoners” in The Observer on 28 May 1961. The stated objective of the  Amnesty International organization is “to conduct research and thereby generate action as to prevent and end abuses of the human rights, and to demand the justice for those whose rights have been violated. The organization claims to have more than 7 million members and supporters worldwide. Amnesty International works on many human rights issues, like ending the death penalty, ensuring free trials, and the release of political prisoners and prisoners of conscience. The Amnesty International organization works to accomplish these goals by providing awareness and recognition of human rights issues.
