Giving Tuesday was started in the year 2012 by the team at the 92nd Street Y, it is a cultural center in New York which is bringing many people together around the values of support and giving back from the year 1874. The concept of the Giving Tuesday was 1st announced by the 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation in October 2012. It is observed on Tuesday, following Thanksgiving in the united states and the well-known shopping events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday. In 2013, Mashable also covered Giving Tuesday, by joining with Google+, holding a hang out-Athlon for Giving Tuesday. In the year 2014, Giving Tuesday launched the #GivingTower; it is a collaboration between the Crowdrise, United Nations Foundation, and 92nd Street Y. Every donation in the #GivingTower symbolizes a brick in the virtual Tower. In the year 2015, The John Templeton Foundation presented a study based on research on Americans that showed that around 93% of respondents were well known with Black Friday, and only 18% are known about GivingTuesday. In the year 2016, as stated by the USA today, the day broke a record in charitable donations around the world with $168 million, topping 2015 absolutely by 44%.
