History of World Students Day
The first World Students Day was celebrated in the year 2010. The United Nations established the Day as a form of honor to the ‘great scientist’ Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam. He was born on 15 October 1931 and raised in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, India. Kalam was the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007. He was also called as “People’s President.” His favorite job was teaching, and he wanted the world to remember him as a teacher. Dr. Kalam always expressed his wish to be recognized as a teacher by the people. Due to his love for students, he focused on promoting education and encouraging them. Thus, the UN had made his birthday be celebrated as World’s Student Day. Students pay tribute to him on this day by reminding the world about his birthday and his importance internationally.
Dr.Kalam was a career scientist who turned into a statesman and studied physics and aerospace engineering. For about four decades, he was a scientist and science administrator at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and in the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). He was personally involved in India’s civilian space program and the military missile development efforts. Dr.Kalam thus came to be known as the Missile Man of India for his incredible work on the development of ballistic missiles and launch vehicle technology. He returned to his civilian life of education, writing, and public service after a single tenure. Dr.Kalam was a receiver of several prestigious awards like the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. Dr.Abdul Kalam was noted for his integrity and his simple lifestyle.
