While spirits have used medicinally, only one started as a medicine and then became a mixer for one of the essential medicines in history. “I don’t know what reception I’m at, but for God’s sake give me a gin and tonic.” – Denis Thatcher
History of World Gin Day
World Gin Day was established by England’s authority of the juniper-based drink, the Gin Monkey. Emma, the titular Gin Monkey, has been a massive fan of cocktails of all kinds and has worked everywhere the Newcastle, London, and Leeds area in multiple cocktail bars. Delivering this experience to the streets, she performed her Gin Monkey site, put together with the intent of saving courageous bar-hoppers from obtaining the worst of the alcohol joints at their end. After having had an amazingly hard time finding anything worth drinking when she first arrived in London, she determined someone had to solve this problem for other travelers, and it might as well be her. Since then she’s taken a dedicated role in contributing independent and disinterested views of the gin joints in her area.
But Gin has had a great history as a medicine, or rather, as a way to make medicine more delicious. Quinine is the distillation of the ground bark of the cinchona tree, which gave a tonic that was capable of handling Malaria. Regrettably, the quinine was amazingly bitter, and gin was used to cut it. The flavour touches, and to this day the Tonic in the Gin and Tonic contains the small bit of quinine to capture the flavour of the original.
