World Asthma Day is celebrated on the first Tuesday of every May. This year it falls on May 2. World Asthma Day is an annual event celebrated to improve asthma awareness, care, and support for those who are affected by Asthma around the world. Preventing the current status of asthma all around the world is vital, and it has become the responsibility of all medical experts to spread Asthma awareness. Asthma administration requires collaborative efforts of the patients, asthma carers, health professionals, community health groups, and other healthcare systems globally. Hence World Asthma Day is a perfect day to raise awareness about Asthma.

Approximately 300 million people have asthma all around the world. Also, it increases by 50 percent every decade. Though its mortality rate is less than 1 percent, asthma reduces life expectancy by 3 years.

Hindered by asthma since I was six weeks old, I had begun experimenting with my diet and discovered a disquieting correlation. When I stopped eating the average American diet of sugar, fats, alcohol, chemicals, and additives, I felt better. I could breathe freely. When I tried to sneak in a hamburger and a Coke, my body rebelled.” – Paul Hawken

History of World Asthma Day

It is an annual event created by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) in 1998. Asthma is a chronic infection of the lungs that create problems while breathing. The symptoms of asthma include breathlessness, coughing, wheezing, and a feeling of tightness in the chest. These symptoms will change in frequency and severity. When the symptoms are not under control, the airways can become inflamed making breathing difficult. While asthma can not be cured; the symptoms can be controlled by enabling people with asthma to live full lives. Organized by healthcare workers in over 35 countries, World Asthma Day aims at educating the people on what research has found to be the most effective ways of controlling, diagnosing, and treating asthma infection.
