“Let the rain kiss you. Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops. Let the rain sing you a lullaby.” – Langston Hughes
History of Rain Day
The Rain Day was started during the late 1800’s at a drugstore located on High Street which is the main street of the town. An unknown local farmer noticed and said to William Allison, a pharmacist, that he observed that it always seems to rain on 29th July of every year. This information inspired William Allison, so he started keeping an annual record of the rainfall on that particular day. William Allison’s brother, Albert, continued recording this event then after the 1920’s, this mystical event was recorded by the late Byron Daily. Rain Day would have remained a local event if it had not been for the attempts of John O’Hara a late Waynesburg newsman. In the 1930’s, he started to send Rain Day stories to other newspapers. Today, all over the world newspapers, TV and radio stations are eagerly flooding the town of Waynesburg with calls every year on July 29th to know if it has rained indeed.
