Rain Day is celebrated on July 29 of every year. July 29 is just another ordinary day to the rest of the world, but to the people of Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, it is an extraordinary day celebrated from generation to generation every year. All life on earth is dependent on rain; Rain is more significant in today’s world than in the past. Rain makes the world green and beautiful. And now people worldwide have Rain Day, a holiday to observe all things wet and wonderful. You don’t have to be a farmer to celebrate the day; there are many things an ordinary person can do to celebrate this day.

Let the rain kiss you. Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops. Let the rain sing you a lullaby.” – Langston Hughes

History of Rain Day

The Rain Day was started during the late 1800s at a drugstore located on High Street, which is the main street of the town. An unknown local farmer noticed and said to William Allison, a pharmacist, that he observed that it always seems to rain on 29th July of every year. This information inspired William Allison, so he started keeping an annual record of the rainfall on that particular day. William Allison’s brother, Albert, continued recording this event after the 1920s, this mystical event was recorded by the late Byron Daily. The Day would have remained a local event if it had not been for the attempts of John O’Hara a late Waynesburg newsman. In the 1930s, he started to send Rain Day stories to other newspapers. Today, all over the world, newspapers, TV, and radio stations are eagerly flooding the town of Waynesburg with calls every year on July 29th to know if it has rained indeed.
