National Sandwich Day is observed on November 3 of every year. Sandwich Day marks the birth anniversary of John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich. There is a rumor that the modern-day version of the sandwich came about when Montagu’s assistants put some meat between two pieces of bread as a way for the Earl to eat his meal while gambling. The sandwich is a popular lunch food in America. Some of the famous sandwiches are BLT, Cheese Sandwich, Philadelphia Cheesesteak, Club Sandwich, Dagwood, French Dip, Hamburger, Monte Cristo, Muffuletta, Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich, Pilgrim, Po’boy, Reuben, Sloppy Joe, Submarine, Tuna Fish Sandwich, Veggie Sandwich, and Deli Sandwich. Hence, National Sandwich Day is a perfect day to enjoy the taste of your favorite sandwich recipe with your family members and friends.

I never thought I want to do anything, really, except not go to work properly and turn up at the same place every day and eat sandwiches in the same canteen, if I can possibly help it, as I don’t think I’d be very good at it.” – Dylan Moran

History of National Sandwich Day

The origin and the founder of National Sandwich Day are still unknown. The exact invention and the first use of sandwiches are still unknown, but the modern sandwiches are believed to be named after John Montagu when his assistants put some chicken between two pieces of bread as a way for the Earl to consume his meal while gambling. It was explained in a contemporary travel book titled “Tour to London”, by Pierre Jean Grosley, which formed the popular myth that bread and meat sustained the Lord Sandwich at the gambling table. It is said that Lord Sandwich was a very conversant player, and he did not take the time to have a meal when he played at the card table. When he felt hungry, he would ask his servants to bring him the slices of meat between two slices of bread. It led to a habit that was known to his gambling friends, and they started began to order “the same as the sandwich,” and from then, the sandwich was born. Montagu – also known as the 4th Earl of Sandwich – quickly discovered there was something quite delicious about the food creation that now bears his name.
