International Peace Day, seldom unofficially known as World Peace Day, is recognized annually on 21 September. It is committed to world peace, and specifically the absence of war and violence, such as might be introduced by a temporary ceasefire in a combat zone for humanitarian aid access. The day was head celebrated in 1982 and is kept by many nations, political groups, military groups, and people. In 2013, for the prime time, the Day was dedicated by the General Secretary of the United Nations to peace education, the key defensive means to reduce war sustainably.

“Peace is not merely a distant goal we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal” – Martin Luther King Jr

To initiate the day, the United Nations Peace Bell is pulled at UN Headquarters (in New York City). The bell is cast from coins provided by children from all regions except Africa and was a gift from the United Nations Association of Japan as “a warning of the human cost of war“; the inscription on its side reads, “Long live independent world peace.”

History Of International Peace Day

The International Day of Peace was first ascertained in 1981 by a resolution 36/67 of the United Nations General Assembly to coincide with its opening session every September. In 2001, the presentation 55/282 was strengthened to make date September 21 the official date annually. It was voted unanimously. World Peace Day is expected to be a day of nonviolence and cease-fire. Today, on International Peace Day, there are many celebrations and peace marches to honor world peace in cities and countries globally. Secretary-General Kofi Annan has proposed all United Nations departments and agencies develop their observance, extending a special request to civil society and highlighting the Minute of Silence at 12 noon. The 2004 Peace Day scored the 50th anniversary of the Peace Bell.
