Worldwide Candle Lighting Day is an annual observance that falls on December 10th. Some of our children would have gone so soon from us. The reason may vary for numerous reasons, and their absence would have left us hopeless and isolated. On this Day, people will honor their son, daughter, sister, brother, grandson, and granddaughter by lighting candles for one hour. Although they have left, their memories stay with us. History of Worldwide Candle Lighting Day
The first observance of the Worldwide Candle Lighting Day was held in the year 1997. The Day is commemorated on the second Sunday of every December. The Compassionate Friends by the American Association of Orphaned Parents initiated this observance in 1996. A self-help group of parents who had lost their children founded this association in England. The Compassionate Friend’s Worldwide Candle Lighting Day was started in the United States. It was initially started as a small internet observance done in honor of children who had lost their lives and lived tragically for short periods. They would have lost their lives due to illness, accidents, war, and other reasons. On this day, hundreds and thousands of people lit candles at 7:00 p.m. local time.
These candles will be placed on a window from the outside. With a one-hour time shift, each candle goes out in a time zone and will ignite in the next one. What it does is create the impression of a light wave that travels around the planet in 24 hours. The basic idea behind this light wave is the Worldwide Candle Lighting as “That their light may always shine” or “May their light shine forever.” They commemorate and honor the memory of all children who had gone too soon. The observance soon spread throughout the world as the remembrance day. Globally, hundreds of formal candle-lighting events will be held. Thousands of informal candlelightings will also be conducted in homes where the families gather in quiet remembrance of children.
