World Sickle Cell Day is celebrated on June 19 of every year. Sickle Cell Disease is an inheritable, genetic, and fatal disease causing red blood cell disorders, which have been classified as sickle cell anemia and may lead to death. The day is observed to cover all the curable standards through the fast awareness program to take this genetic health condition under control across the world. A variety of promotional activities will be conducted by the WHO (World Health Organization) on the worldwide level to fix this hemoglobin dysfunction issue.

History of World Sickle Cell Day

In 2008, the United Nations General Assembly created World Sickle Cell Day to raise awareness among people about sickle cell disease and its treatment methods. On 19th June 2009, The day was first observed. According to the reports, in Africa, nearly 1000 babies are taking birth every day, having Sickle Cell Disease, and getting die up to five years of age. In the United States of America, nearly 100,000 people get affected by this disease. People in other countries like India, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the Arabic peninsula, Brazil, Surinam, Guiana, Southern Italy, Greece, etc., are also get affected by this disease. Hence it is a big public health issue that must be under control to save our whole nation’s future. Hence World Sickle Cell Day is a perfect day to raise public awareness about this fatal disease to get sufficient control over the situation.
