National Violin Day is celebrated on December 13 of every year. The violin is a wooden string instrument, generally known as the fiddle. They contain four strings tuned in perfect fifths. Violins are the smallest and highest-pitched members of the violin of string instruments. The others are viola and cello. The person who plays the violin is called a fiddler or violinist. A lot of techniques are used by musicians to produce music from the violin. The music is created by drawing a bow across the strings. Over the years, violinists have shown the versatility of violin in different genres such as classical, folk music, jazz music, baroque music, roll, rock, and soft rock music. Hence, the violin is a versatile instrument in music, and that’s why there’s a National Violin Day to celebrate it.

When you play a violin piece, you are a storyteller, and you’re telling a story.” – Joshua Bell

History of National Violin Day

The origin and creator of National Violin Day are still unknown. In the 16th century, the violin was first introduced, and further modifications were made during the 18th and 19th centuries. In the 1660s, Violin was the most famous instrument in Europe. Moreover, the violin is in the most prestigious musical group in the world. There is a belief that Turkic and Mongolian horsemen from Asia were the world’s earliest violinists. The horsehair string was strung with the two-stringed upright fiddle. They played them with horsehair bows and often featured a carved horse’s head at the end of the neck. The violins we play today, whose bows are still screwed with horsehair, are a legacy of the nomads.
