National Bat Appreciation Day is observed on April 17 of every year. Bats are flying mammals with forelimbs that are webbed and developed as wings, making them the only mammals naturally capable of accurate and sustained flight. There are about 1,100 bat species worldwide. Nearly seventy percent of bats feed on insects. Most of the rest are fruit eaters and few species such as the Fish-eating Bat feed on animals other than insects, with the vampire bats feeding on blood. Bats can be seen around most of the world and perform vital ecological roles such as pollinating flowers; dispersing fruit seeds and consuming insect pests including mosquitoes, reducing the need for pesticides. Many tropical plant species depend on bats for the distribution of their seeds. Most of the bats are nocturnal, hangs upside down, travel using echolocation, and roost in dark caves. Bat dung has been mined from caves and used as fertilizer. Bats are sometimes numerous enough to serve as tourist attractions. Bats are consumed across Asia and the Pacific Rim. This day is celebrated to appreciate bats for the role it plays in the balance of ecology and to spread information on the importance to protect them.

Twinkle, twinkle little bat How I wonder what you’re at! Up above the world you fly, Like a tea-tray in the sky.” – Lewis Carroll

History of National Bat Appreciation Day

The reason for creation and the creator of National Bat Appreciation Day remains a mystery. The fact is that the mammal is present around us even if we can not spot them, and they help in reducing the insect pests, pollinates flowers and fruits, and much more. Many species of this mammal have already become extinct. So this day is important to be celebrated to mark and spread awareness about this mammal and its crucial roles in our biological life.
