International Animation Day is an annual observance celebrated on October 28th of each year. Animation is playing a great role in this century. It is all around us including 3D movies, cartoons, and video games. International Animation Day celebrates and honors the first public performance of Charles-Émile Reynaud’s Theatre Optique. The celebration of the Day recognizes and celebrates all the artists, scientists, and technicians behind the animation.

“Animation offers a medium of story telling and visual entertainment which can bring pleasure and information to people of all ages everywhere in the world.” – Walt Disney

History of International Animation Day

International Animation Day (IAD) was first celebrated in the year 2002. International Animated Film Association, i.e., Association Internationale du Film d’Animation ( ASIFA) established this celebration day to celebrate the art of animation. ASIFA, a member of UNESCO, was organized to recognize all forms of cinema and art. The unofficial holiday is precisely celebrated on this date as it marks the first public appearance of Charles-Emile Reynaud’s Theatre Optique at the Grevin Museum in Paris, France.

International Animation Day

Theatre Optique or Optical Theater is a machine that creates images on a screen using a projector and mirrors. Then, the images are painted on a ribbon winded into a spool. Another spool will now unwind the ribbon as the images are projected on the screen. Reynaud showed three cartoons during the show, who also acted as his projectionists and was accompanied by a pianist. About 600 individually drawn images were put together on the ribbon each cartoon was 15 minutes long.

Animation is the process of creating moving images by displaying the static images in succession. Every image slightly differs from the preceding image. These differences in the images will create the movement in the sequence. Those images were hand-drawn pictures and paintings. Present-day images are drawn using the computer by the artists. At present, the event has been observed in more than 50 different countries from all over the world, with more than 1000 events.
