World Heart Day comes on 29th September of every year. The World Heart Federation (WHF) is committed to uniting its members and leads the global fight against heart disease and stroke, with a focus on low- and middle-income countries. The federation is the world’s only global body dedicated to leading the battle against heart disease and stroke via a united community of nearly 200 member organizations. That brings together the power of medical societies and heart foundations from more than 100 countries covering the countries of Asia-Pacific, Europe, East Mediterranean, the Americas, and Africa.

Each year, nearly 17.3 million people die of cardiovascular disease, 80% in the developing world. The federation exists to prevent and control these diseases through awareness campaigns and activities, promoting the exchange of information, ideas, and science among those involved in cardiovascular care, advocating for disease prevention and control by promoting healthy diets, physical activity, and tobacco-free living at an individual, community, and policymaker level. World Heart Day was designed to inform people around the globe that heart disease and stroke are the world’s foremost causes of death. Together with companies such as WHO, the WHF spreads the news that at least 80 percent of untimely deaths from heart disease and stroke could be avoided if the main risk factors, which are tobacco, unhealthy diet, and physical inactivity, are controlled.

“With all of the holiday cheer in the air, it’s easy to overlook the ingredients in the foods. Ingredients such as salt, sugar, and fat – all of which leads to diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, strokes, heart disease, and cancer.” – Lee Haney

History of World Heart Day

World Heart Day was feasted every year on the last Sunday of September month from the year it was established till 2010. It is an active event created in 2000 and organized annually by the WHF since 2000. From the year 2011, it started celebrating annually on the 29th of September (which means no longer on the last Sunday of the month). WHF and its members are actively involved in the celebration to reach the news about premature deaths from heart diseases and their risk factors (tobacco intake, lack of physical exercise, unhealthy diet, and alcohol intake) to the general public. There are several collaborators of the WHF in this attack, including several major international non-profits (Indian Heart Association). Through this campaign, several active preventative measures are promoted to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

It drives people to participate and gain some knowledge, go through the proper heart check-ups, and follow other control devices all through life. It is a complete day when many people make promises to themselves to quit smoking, get involved in daily physical activities, start eating a healthy diet, etc., to keep their hearts in good working order.
