National Education Day is commemorated to honor the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (the first education minister of independent India). He is also a freedom fighter, and his real name was Abul Kalam Ghulam Muhiyuddin. History of National Education Day

On September 11, 2018, the Ministry of Human Resource Development officially announced this day to commemorate the birthday of Abul Kalam Ghulam Muhiyuddin, who served as an education minister for India from 15 August 1947 to 2 February 1958. According to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Schools are the laboratories to produce future citizens of the country. He strongly supported primary education, girls’ education, and must free education for all children up to the age of 14. To increase revolutionary recruits, he started a weekly journal in Urdu called Al-Hilal in 1912. For his contribution as a freedom fighter and an educationist, he was awarded Bharat Ratna Award (India’s highest civilian honor) in the year 1992. Then he established most of the major cultural and literary academies like Sangeet Natak Academy, Lalit Kala Academy, Sahitya Academy, Indian Council for Cultural Relations, and much more. Under his ownership, the first IIT, IISc, School of Planning and Architecture, and the University Grants Commission were established.
