Days of the Week in Arabic

Every day in the week is explained and pronounced with different words in the other languages. The first day of the week, Sunday in Arabic is written as الأحد, and it is pronounced as “al’ahad.” The second day of the week, Monday in Arabic is written as الإثنين, and it is pronounced as “al’iithnin.” The third day of the week, Tuesday in Arabic is written as الثلاثاء, and it is pronounced as “althulatha’.” The fourth day of the week, Wednesday in Arabic is written as الأربعاء, and it is pronounced as “al’arbiea’.” The fifth day of the week, Thursday in Arabic is written as الخميس, and it is pronounced as “alkhamis.” The sixth day of the week, Friday in Arabic is written as يوم الجمعة, and it is pronounced as “yawm aljumea.” The last and seventh day of the week, Saturday in Arabic is written as يوم السبت, and it is pronounced as “yawm alsabt.” The names of all the days in the Arabic Language are listed in the simple table.

Days of the Week in Arabic

There are several opinions to explain how the 7-days in the week are originated. Initially, Babylonian astrologers around 700 BCE assigned the planet gods to the days in the week.  Then, Romans changed the names of the week with their planet gods in the ancient Roman Calendar. Later, Germanic and Norse people also changed the names with the names of their gods. As per the rules of the International Standard ISO 8601, Monday is the first day of the week and then it is followed by the Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Even though it is the international standard, some of the countries like United States of America, Canada, Australia, India and much more countries consider Sunday as the first day of the week. The names for the seven days in the week came from the Roman Calendar and each day relates to 7 celestial bodies: the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.
