National Cartoonists Day is an annual celebration held on May 5th of every year. Haven’t you noticed those daily newspaper cartoons with the word bubble and forgot to glance at other news for a while? There would be many for whom those cartoons are the favorite part of the morning newspaper. Those creative sketches will deliver the reader so much valuable information seriously or comically. Obviously, creating such characters for the paper needs a higher level of creativity and humor skills.  Day by day the love for cartoons is increasing among all age groups. It is indeed vital to celebrate all those creative cartoonists or artists who bring both informative and humorous thoughts of pictures with a special day on the calendar. National Cartoonists Day is created with the intention to honor and celebrate the cartoonists and their cartoons.

History of National Cartoonists Day

National Cartoonists Day has been celebrated since the year 1999. National Cartoonist Society has launched this celebration. The Cartoonists Day is a form of dedication for all the cartoonists and those favorite cartoons that they have created for the paper. The date is precisely chosen as it was on May 5th of 1895, Hogan’s Alley, the first color newspaper cartoon had been published. The first comic was later known as The Yellow Kid, and it was the first commercially successful cartoon icon that gained popularity. Richard F Outcault was the person who introduced the Hogan’s Alley in the New York Sunday World and appeared in a yellow nightshirt. The Yellow Kid by Outcault is a barefoot boy with a bald head who wears a yellow, hand-me-down nightshirt and his thoughts printed on his shirt.

The same character had even appeared in the black-and-white cartoons in the newspapers previously. The Yellow Kid was created as an archetype of the world who was friendly, warm, sunny, generous, and selfless. The famous cartoon character had appeared on the postcards, billboards, cigarette packs, and other product advertisements quickly. Cartoonists Day has been created to celebrate Outcault and his incredible creativity and all the thoughts of the Yellow Kid. Polly Keener and Ken Alvine were the co-chairpersons of the National Cartoonists Day Committee who has come up with this idea of the celebration to increase awareness of this beautiful creation of Outcault.
