History of National Blueberry Popover Day

There isn’t any mention of the history and origin of the National Blueberry Popover Day. We are unable to identify the creator of this special day. However, popovers have been in existence since the 1850s. A popover is a quickbread with a light, hollow airy roll prepared from an egg batter similar to that of Yorkshire pudding. It is usually baked in a small pan or dedicated popover pans that is different from muffin tins. The pan will have straight-walled sides rather than angled. The airy rolls will puff out over the edge of the tin when baked. The popover will be crispy on the outside whereas the warm and often hollow insides. It is filled with custards, creams, and fruits for sweet treats with blueberries as a primary ingredient.

Popover can be served with savory combinations as like the Yorkshire pudding. The name for this American origin “popover” comes from the fact as the batter swells or “pops” over the top of the muffin tins while baking. The popover is also called Laplander, a term for the Sami people. The oldest known reference to the popovers is mentioned in a letter of E. E. Stuart’s during the 1850s and whereas the first cookbook to print a recipe for the popovers was M. N. Henderson, Practical Cooking, in 1876.
